Before you look at ‘Hygge’ and think what is this girl on spelling the world hug so badly, Hygge (pronounced hue-guh) is the Danish word for a feeling cosy or special and how someone can bring that cosy feeling into every day.
Hygge isn’t something that can be bought or owned or even eaten, it is a feeling of contentedness or cosiness and is meant to teach people how to take better care of their selves, slow down and survive cold winter days in snowy places. I love this concept as someone who needs to be better at relaxing and resting. I have made myself and 7-day self-care ‘Hygge’ challenge and wanted to share it with you. All product links, recipes, and websites will be at the bottom of the page. There is some very cute and infomative books on the subject now.
Day 1 – Comfort to me is warming foods which take longer to make and the Danish agree. Today’s challenge is to make a big bowl of porridge, and a homemade chai latte and eat it slowly in between reading my novel before university.
Day 2 – I do yoga most days but not with a fancy playlist and candle burning. I will be using one of the yoga playlists from Spotify while burning my hot cross bun candle and taking it slowly. I will also not overdo it on the study to the point where I want to throw this laptop across the room.
Day 3 – I do a big clean most days because I tend to get annoyed by any mess, I want to get less obsessive and will be trying out the 15-minute cleaning method which I have linked more about below. Today I also plan on buying some cute fairy lights as light is so important for that cosy feeling. I will also be looking for new hot drink recipes on Pinterest.
Day 4 – On this day I plan on creating a little space for myself with a soft chair, big blankets, cushions and soft lighting and of course a place for my dog. I will also call my nana as I do at least once a week, and make some natural cleaning products using essential oils.
Day 5 – The Danish don’t believe in depriving yourself from sweet things, I often do so this week I’m going to make some peanut or almond butter cups, and maybe some banana bread for dad. I am also going to listen to the Melissa Ambrosini podcast which focuses on wellness and healthy eating.
Day 6 – I’m going to do a face mask while watching a thriller ( my favourite type of film) and will try and get an early night. I would also like to make Lola dog treats with oats and bananas. Last but not least I want to book in a manicure as little things to look forward to are vital to Hygge.
Day 7 – I hope to spend the night away from the TV, and will play board games and light candles and chill out instead. I also plan to travel further afield to try out a new cafe and will work on my makeup organisation and storage.
